MJW EA & Company LLC provides year-round tax and bookkeeping services for both the individual and the small business. Our tax clients include the 1040 crowd (individuals), the 1065/1120 movers and shakers (small businesses), the 990 non-profiters and the 1041 club (trusts and estates).
Apart from our voluminous tax work, we also provide personal and business bookkeeping services (including bill paying, making deposits, handling client QuickBooks, making reconciliations), help in filling out the FAFSA, planning for retirement and advising on the best strategy for receiving your Social Security benefits. In other words, it’s the soup to nuts for all aspects of your tax life.
Ethics, integrity, care for the client’s needs and a passion for helping people is what has gone into the 30+ years of building this company. As a client, you can expect genuine interest in your situation, attention above and beyond what you might expect from a tax firm, a team who is on your side researching answers to the tough tax questions and zealous representation in front of the IRS (should the need arise).
While accounting was her beginning, Mary Jo, founder of MJW EA & Company LLC, soon discovered a love for taxes and in 1982 decided that becoming an Enrolled Agent would be the best path in order to provide the type of tax service she wanted to provide to our clients. Why an EA (Enrolled Agent) and not a CPA (Certified Public Accountant)? Basically:
- Only Enrolled Agents are required to demonstrate to the IRS their competence in all areas of taxation, representation and ethics before they are given unlimited representation rights before IRS. Unlike CPAs, who are state licensed and who may or may not choose to specialize in taxes, all Enrolled Agents specialize in taxation.
- EAs adhere to a stringent Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional Conduct, as well as the Treasury Department’s Circular 230 regulations and work to make the tax code fair and reasonably enforced.
Who else would you want handling your taxes?
Meet the Staff…
Mary Jo Walker
, EA, RFC, ADPA
As head of this office, I have to understand accounting and tax standards, practices, rules and regulations. To that end, I have been an Enrolled Agent since 1989 and have been diligent in staying abreast of changes in the field. But in day to day practice, my focus goes beyond knowledge in my field.
In any conversation it is easy to hear what you want to hear or what you expect to hear. I have found that my primary job is to listen, both to clients and employees. When I do that well, the solutions we propose to client issues are tailored to the specific client. We want no “one size fits all” solutions coming out of this office. Each is specific to a particular situation; context is always relevant.
The work we do is detailed and serious, but it is also very human, rewarding, often fun and sometimes strange. Very few tax and accounting professionals have had the experience of taking an ill client’s birds to a bird rehab center in a small convertible (I like convertibles). The song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” which might be my favorite song ever, reminds me that life is serious, strange, fun and always an adventure. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Charon Squitiero
I joined the MJW EA & Company LLC in November, 2015. My duties as HR Manager/Bookkeeper include bookkeeping, human resources and assisting with the administrative tasks.
I graduated from Quinnipiac University with an Accounting and Financial Management degree. I worked for 2 years as a staff accountant and left to start my own retail business. An invaluable experience to say the least, this venture allowed me to learn all of the nuts and bolts associated with being a business owner. I have been married for 23 years and have three children. While staying home for 18 years, I kept up with my bookkeeping skills by being the treasurer at the various Madison Public Schools and as being the property manager for family owned office buildings.
Three adjectives that I would use to describe myself are organized, loyal and unique.
I am an avid reader and have been in the same book club for over 10 years. Contact me at csquitiero@maryjowalker.com.
Deb DeRusha
My name is Deb and I have been working at MJW EA & Company LLC since February 2012. What began as a part-time tax preparation position quickly transitioned into a full-time tax professional position and the beginning of a new career for me. My duties include personal and business tax preparation, bookkeeping and being the office’s QuickBooks “expert.” I passed the Enrolled Agent exam in 2015 and am now a licensed EA with a degree from CCSU in Accounting.
What I enjoy most about working here is having the opportunity to help people with their tax and business needs. Whether it’s telling a client about an available tax credit, relieving them of the stress of responding to a tax notice or simply being available to help them with their questions during the year, it’s a great feeling to know we are helping our clients with something that can be very stressful and confusing for them.
I am an avid reader and a fan of trivia. Contact me at dderusha@maryjowalker.com.
Laura Chiulli
I joined MJW EA & Company LLC in September of 2019. I provide small business consulting and tax planning and preparation for individuals, partnerships, corporations, sole proprietors, estates and trusts. Prior to joining the firm, I worked in both public and corporate accounting and have developed a thorough understanding of the specific needs of small businesses. In the corporate sector, I worked as a controller for a privately held start-up manufacturing company, an international law partnership and most recently in the audible book industry.
I have been a CPA for 20+ years and enjoy getting to know my clients and assisting in their growth and success. While my family finds my fascination with all things tax a bit strange, I enjoy keeping up with the frequent tax changes and find “tax season” invigorating and intellectually challenging.
I love living on the Connecticut shoreline with my husband and pit-mix rescue pup named Lola. I am an avid reader of historical fiction and am addicted to true-crime podcasts. Contact me at lchiulli@maryjowalker.com.
Victoriaanna Adinolfi
As the Office Manager at MJW EA, I perform the standard assortment of administrative of tasks – directing phones, sorting mail, A/R, reaching out to clients and helping to answer questions when I can – along with a buffet of special projects as they come up. I have been with MJW EA & Company since 2013.
Though I have a degree in English/History and wanted to be a professional writer, I have yet to publish the great American book of short stories. My professional history includes various office settings from P&C insurance to health service to non-profit. Outside of administrative positions, I’ve worked as a cook and as a grower at a local garden center. I definitely don’t mind getting my hands dirty.
I would describe myself as curious, feisty and moral. I am an ardent Trekkie.
If someone asked me to pick a favorite song, I would say it is impossible to pick a favorite song, in the same way that one cannot pick a favorite book. However, I would say that a desert island contender for songs on a mix tape would include “Rock the Casbah” by The Clash. And since I brought it up, a desert island book would be The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Contact me at vadinolfi@maryjowalker.com.
Mary Laske
I joined MJW EA & Company LLC in January, 2016. What began as a temporary position as an extra hand during tax season soon blossomed into a part-time Administrative Assistant’s position.
I graduated from University of New England with a BS in Occupational Therapy. After working for 25+ years as an occupational therapist, I was ready for a change and I found it here at MJW EA & Company.
What I enjoy most about working here are my coworkers and the camaraderie that exists amongst all of us. I also enjoy the excitement of racing towards the tax deadline.
I have been married for 30 years and have three grown children who live and work in NYC. My hobbies include boating, camping, traveling and visiting my kids in the Big Apple. My favorite song is “Let it Be.” I built a home for the ducks who sometimes live in my back yard. It’s called the Quack Shack. Contact me at mlaske@maryjowalker.com.
Barbara Scalise
I have worked at MJW EA & Company LLC since 2004 as a bookkeeper. I’ve worked in a number of different fields and though the majority of my work has been in the bookkeeping arena, I have also been an office manager and an orthodontic assistant.
I would describe myself as relaxed and good-natured. I am an animal lover and am a proud parent of Francine, a Golden Retriever.
My favorite song is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Contact me at bscalise@maryjowalker.com.
Christine Nocera
Hi, my name is Christine and I just started working at MJW EA & Company LLC in August of 2018. I’ll be working part-time until the “busy season” when I expect I’ll be here full-time! I will be preparing individual tax returns as well as a few gift tax and business returns. I started my tax career at PwC in Hartford (at the time, it was just Price Waterhouse) after receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from UConn and acquiring my CPA license shortly thereafter. I spent 13+ years there before moving to New York City (a dream come true for me!). I stayed with PwC, but transferred into their Learning and Development area. After a career of 26+ years, I retired and moved to Madison, CT. I am happily back doing what I love, which is everything taxes!! I am enjoying the easy camaraderie of Mary Jo Walker’s office and learning (and re-learning) a lot from all of the professionals here.
I’ve walked a couple of marathons and I have to get those 10,000 steps in every day! I love to travel, read, cross-stitch and I love to laugh! Contact me at cnocera@maryjowalker.com.
